Finding the Balance
Finding the Balance Finding the Balance Finding the BalanceDaniel Kim was working on a vehicle in his garage when he was almost crushed by a steel frame. Thankful to only come out of it with bruises, it got him thinking about life, which led to him thinking about how much of it is spent alonein a vehicle.Out of it came the start of the C-1, an electricmotorcycle being designed in many ways like a carmaybe the most recognizable onebeing that its self-enclosed. But its also trying to deal with one of the most difficult elementsof motorcycle design balance. The C-1 motorcycle attempts to deal with this through gyroscopic technology. Eric Stromswold, vice president for CMG Systems for Lit Motors, the company behind the C-1, fills us in. Its an all-electric self-balancing motorcycle he says. Basically, the control moment gyros (CMGs) are allowing it to be driven like a car and to actively balance when it stops. There are actually two gyroscopes one can be a backup for the other.A CMG has the benefit in that it can get far more torque out for far less power, Stromswold says. So rather than speeding up and slowing down the flywheel, youre keeping the flywheel at same speed but youre changing the pointing direction of the CMGs of the flywheel. It also has an automatic kick stand there to stabilize the bike.Daniel Kim (left) and his team testing C-1s gyro-stabilizers. Image Lit MotorsAccording to the Lit Motors website, the C-1 uses high-torque in-hub electric motors, a kinetic energy recovery system storing the energy in the gyro flywheels. It also says the motorcycle maintains stability as it leans itself into and out of turns.According to Kim, who is the CEO/CTO for Lit Motors, among the goals for the motorcycle is to be able to go 0-60 mph in less than 6 seconds and have a range of 200 miles per charge. To me, making the range as good as it can be is the more important of the two, he says. I want people to really have a good long experience.Kim wont put an exact dat e on when to expect to see the C-1 in production but is optimistic about the results hes seen thus far. Weve done several tests and theres still a lot to do, mostly on higher speed driving, Kim says of the bike, which, like many motorcycles, can fit a second person behind the driver. We hope we can, in some way, change the world through this and change the way we look at how we use technology to better our lives and have a more sustainable means of transportation. Its also a new vehicle to identify with.Hes also excited about someone being able to call themselves a motorcyclist with added safety. Motorcycle accidents can have you flying off the bike where you dont know how youre going to land or what youll hit on the way down, he says. A fully enclosed cabin is a controlled environment. Thats just one of the great things about this.Eric Butterman is an independent writer. Its an all-electric self-balancing motorcycleBasically, the controlled Momo gyros are allowing it to be driven li ke a car and to actively balance when it stops.Eric Stromswold, VP for CMG Systems, Lit Motors

What Steve Jobs learned building fences that changed history
What Steve Jobs learned building fences that changed historyWhat Steve Jobs learned building fences that changed historyApple may have made radical changes to the way the world communicates, but we can also learn something from Steve Jobs life before the company.Walter Isaacson is currently the President and CEO of The Aspen Institute, a Tulane University history professor, former editor of TIME and former chairman and CEO of CNN. He wrotea biography on Jobs- at the moguls request before his death - which came out soon after he passed away in 2011, 60 Minutes reports. The book was based on interviews with more than 100 sources, including Jobs himself. But one story really got to the heart of Jobs knack for the details as presented in 60 MinutesWhat Jobs learned about dedicationAfter Isaacson mentioned how abrasive Jobs could be with others while in pursuit of perfection, 60 Minutes reports that the author reportedly believes that much of it can be traced to the earliest years of his life. And to the fact that Jobs was born out of wedlock, given up by his birth parents, and adoption by a working-class couple from Mountain View, California.Isaacson then went on to tell the programthat Paul Jobs was a salt of the earth guy, who was a great mechanic. And he taught his son Steve how to make great things, and he once, they were building a fence, and he said, You gotta make the back of the fence - that nobody will see - just as good looking as the front of the fence. Even though nobody will see it, you will know, and that will show that youre dedicated to making something perfect. 60 Minutesthen reports that Jobs was aware of his adoption, but a featured audio interview with Isaacson for the biography (one of many in the video clip) reveals even more about the moguls outlook on life.Jobs thought that he was chosenIn the audio interview, Jobs tells Isaacson that as a kid, he told someone across the street from his home about his adoption, and she asked him if this was because his birth parents werent interested in raising him. Jobs said he went running into the house, questioning his adoptive parents about it.His parents said, No, you dont understand. We specifically picked you out, according to Jobs.Isaacson then told 60 Minutes that Jobs said, From then on, I realized that I was not just abandoned, I was chosen. I was special.(Click here to watch the 60 Minutes report)

5 things you definitely shouldnt do during your job search in 20185 things you definitely shouldnt do during your job search in 2018With the new year come plenty of opportunities to get your job search right. This is what you shouldnt do during your job search in 2018.Allude to your ageDont give anyone a reason to doubt your skills.Peter Economy, a ghostwriter and author, writes in Inc. that you should not include age identifiers on your resume or LinkedIn page.Dont list those positions you had a long time ago, and leave off graduation dates, he writes. Age discrimination does exist, and you at least want to get your foot in the door for an interview so they can see how awesome you are at creating age-irrelevance.Fail to be your own championMarcello Barros, author of The International Advantage Get Noticed. Get Hired, writes about this in The Muse. Some people spend precious emotional energy assuring themselves that the hund is taking as long as it is because they simply arent good eno ugh, he writes. And when you stop believing in yourself, youre in trouble. Dont rush into a decision like taking a position you feel uneasy about or heading back to school simply out of fear. Instead remind yourself of all the reasons you might not be getting a call back that have nothing to do with you (like if youve been applying to roles you truly arent qualified for).Be too narrow in your job searchYou may not even realize that youre limiting your options.A FlexJobs post says that job searching only by job title is not the way to go.While you may identify with a specific title, each employer can have a different title for the same job duties. When you focus only on job titles, you narrow your search too closely and may miss opportunities that would be a perfect match for your experience. Instead of focusing on the job title, consider searching by industry and desired flexibility. You can also use keywords or search by company, it says.Fail to do your homeworkYoull want to know a s much as possible.Lillian Childress writes on Glassdoor that skipping your research is not a good idea.A well-informed candidate is always preferable to the alternative. Asking questions about your specific interests in the company, and even just asking general questions about what the company does, are some of the most common interview questions out there. If you havent done your research, its ultimately a waste - not only of the recruiters time, but also of your own, she writes. Not get back in touch after an interviewAlison Doyle, a career expert, author, and founder and CEO of CareerToolBelt.com, writes in The Balance that you shouldnt be forgetting to follow up.Following up after a job interview gives you one more chance to make a good impression, she writes. Why This Company Wants to Pay You to Learn Todays Most In-Demand Skills
Why This Company Wants to Pay You to Learn Todays Most In-Demand SkillsWhy This Company Wants to Pay You to Learn Todays Most In-Demand Skills Should I keep working, or go back to school? Its a question that many of those who are stuck in a career plateau ask themselves, and its a tough one at that. On the one hand, taking time off to hone yur skills can lead to new job opportunities, higher salaries and mora engaging work - on the other hand, you risk losing your steady stream of cash inflow in the short run.But technology services and consulting company Infosys believes that you shouldnt have to choose between learning and earning. In fact, last year the company announced plans to hire 10,000 American workers and open four new Technology and Innovation Hubs across the country, which will teach cutting-edge subjects like artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud computing and mora. One of the things in which we take immense pride is our ability to train our employees, says Rajesh Ahuja, Global Head of Talent Acquisition at Infosys. Its not a competency which weve just developed now - this was the imagination of our founders.Through this latest hiring and training initiative, the company expects to make a larger impact in the U.S. than they ever have before. Their ultimate goal? Equipping American workers with the skills of tomorrow. We spoke with Ahuja to learn more about Infosys unique training program, what theyre looking for in employees and how you can join in.Rajesh Ahuja The technology services industry is going through some significant changes, the biggest one being that technology itself is changing quite drastically. The headline you often see is that its changing because of artificial intelligence , but thats only one part of it. With agile, DevOps, the cloud and so on, the methodology of delivering services is going through a transformation. The second big change is that technology has become very important to the geschft liches miteinander world in general. It doesnt matter which industry youre in - technology has become critical rather than just a support function, and the way companies want to engage with service providers like us is different. Lastly, the narrative around global mobility has changed, and its not just in the U.S. Its happening across the world. When we looked at all ansicht factors, we realized we had to start looking at a combination of global talent and local talent, and look at some of the ways in which we can be more suited to the next few years of evolution in our industry. And we thought one of the best strategies was to increase the localization in the U.S. However, as we went through the process, we realized that the bigger picture was the skill shortage and how to make the world more ready for the skills of the future. Theres this constant paradigm of training and re-training that has become a bigger narrative than just localization.Rajesh Ahuja One of the things in w hich we take immense pride is our ability to train our employees. And its not a competency which weve just developed now - this was the vision of our founders. We have 700 full-time educators who work with us to develop new engineering curriculums and impart that knowledge to our employees globally. Whats new is weve taken a deep look at our content and our ability to constantly train and retrain people, and weve launched an industry-leading training platform where we are looking at each individuals needs from their perspective but also from the larger perspective of the skills of tomorrow. Its a combination of online classes , classroom education and dedicated specialists employees can refer to. Were partnering with some of the largest education platforms around the world - LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, Udacity - and bringing their content to our platform so that our employees get the best learning experience possible. Were going to open a large training facility out of Indianap olis, and we expect that hub to really be a focal point for American workers to join our corporate university. Were not just talking from a globalization perspective of hiring and supplying locally - were also talking about upskilling and reskilling at a large scale to build the local labor market.Rajesh Ahuja We chose these locations based on a combination of three factors. One is talent availability and the potential for us to grow more talent. Its also about where our clients are and how we can serve them better with a local hub. And last but not least, we look at how engaged we can get with the local ecosystem universities, the local government, etc., which allows us to become a part of the larger community. One of the things which we have really adopted is using design to promote innovation and collaboration. Working in any large organization tends to get a bit siloed, so were trying to instill a concept of boundaryless thinking with open spaces and technical areas where peo ple can design and work in a deliberate environment. Theres a lot of encouragement to try new things.Rajesh Ahuja Absolutely. Were looking for a mixture of talent, people who are experienced and have been working in the industry and folks who want to work with us. We also look at candidates through a multidisciplinary perspective, so we have STEM graduates, we have college graduates and now we are also expanding our program to those with associates degrees or who came from community colleges. We want to bring people on board who have two strong skills the ability to learn and the willingness to learn, and we are very confident that if they have those two skills, we will be able to teach them the fundamentals of programming or databases or anything else.Rajesh Ahuja Its mostly a traditional einstellungsgesprch process. However, for more specific positions, there could be a more involved selection around concepts related to a certain skill or what they are going to study. From an in terviewing perspective, Infosys believes in understanding the details of the work the candidate has done, whether it was a school project or for their job. The set of questions youll typically get in an interview are around whether or not you can explain what youve done, how it went and what you think you could have done differently. Its about critical thinking and the ability to analyze.Rajesh Ahuja We are a company that truly believes in each individual learning and growing with the organization. We provide not only the opportunity for people to come and do a job, but a platform where theyll learn and grow forever. And the kind of work we do with our clients is phenomenal. Typically, you will get to work on projects that are very important and very cool. And the third would be its a great team - people work very effectively with each other here. We are very cross-cultural, we are very genuine and its a good working environment.Rajesh Ahuja Its great, because your work is not li mited by whats given to you, or whats being requested by a client. You have the ability to ask for more and do more beyond the given. Each individual is asked to think about how they can create value to the client they are serving, which could be better software, better output or less effort required. Our employees come up with ideas and concepts which our clients have never thought of, and these are clients which are large multinational corporations while we are a tech company - we allow our employees to work in small teams to deliver better value. Infosys allows you to push the envelope on things all the time, and youre only limited by your tenacity, your resilience and your ability to think of more.Rajesh Ahuja I think the essential skill that can give everybody the ability to participate in the labor market is learning. If you are continuously able to learn something new, you will stay relevant. Just look at software programmers what people were programming five years back has changed already. I would encourage every individual to learn something new, especially because learning has become easier - there are enough internet resources, video tutorials and individuals available to help you out. But each individual will have to come out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves much more.Rajesh Ahuja A few things. One, the whole digital transformation which is happening across the tech industry is magical, and seeing how deep that digital transformation will really take us is extremely exciting. And when I say digital transformation, I mean digitizing the core of an enterprise, or the way we use services - not just how we consume services. Infosys expects to play a big role in that. The second is how some of the technology of the future will improve our day-to-day. Life is going to become simpler and better by using technologies of the future like artificial intelligence, machine learning and more, and Im excited to see how companies like us can play a part in making the products that impact the world. And finally, the whole dynamic around how skills and work will change, and how we will reimagine and reinvent the roles of our current employees as well as future employees is another very exciting thing.Want to become automation-proof, and get paid to do it?
